During the 30 year dictatorship of ex-president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, government and economic power was centralized in Malé. As a result people migrate to Malé from the outer atolls, looking for an easier, modern life and more work opportunities, but what they find is overcrowding, traffic, chaos and stretched social services. One of the central pillars of President Mohamed Nasheed's reform movement is to decentralize the power from Malé and thus reduce this stress on the capital.
